Yuval Noah Harari on the power of data, artificial intelligence and the future of the human race

#artificialintelligence

When Yuval Noah Harari published his first book, "Sapiens," in 2014 about the history of the human species, it became a global bestseller, and turned the little-known, Israeli history professor into one of the most popular writers and thinkers on the planet. But when we met with Harari in Tel Aviv this summer, it wasn't our species' past that concerned him, it was our future. Harari believes we may be on the brink of creating not just a new, enhanced species of human, but an entirely new kind of being - one that is far more intelligent than we are. It sounds like science fiction, but Yuval Noah Harari says it's actually much more dangerous than that. Anderson Cooper: You said, "We are one of the last generations of Homo sapiens. Within a century or two, Earth will be dominated by entities that are more different from us than we are different from chimpanzees."

7 things we learned about Boston Dynamics from '60 Minutes'

"If Willy Wonka made robots, his workshop might look something like this," Anderson Cooper said while touring Boston Dynamics' Waltham workshop. Cooper was visiting for a "60 Minutes" segment which gave a behind-the-scenes look at the company and their life-like robots. The segment titled "Boston Dynamics: Inside the workshop where robots of the future are being built" initially aired in March โ€“ a few weeks after Anderson's visit โ€“ and was rebroadcast last night. Boston Dynamics is also featured on another online segment uploaded today, regarding their efforts to help create autonomous Mars rovers. Boston Dynamics gave 60 Minutes a rare look into how it created some of the most agile robots in the world. Cooper talked to Boston Dynamics' founder, Mark Raibert, and CEO, Robert Playter, as well as other technicians and employees.

Boston Dynamics: Inside the workshop where robots of the future are being built

Boston Dynamics is a cutting-edge robotics company that's spent decades behind closed doors making robots that move in ways we've only seen in science fiction films. They occasionally release videos on YouTube of their life-like machines spinning, somersaulting or sprinting, which are greeted with fascination and fear. We've been trying, without any luck, to get into Boston Dynamics' workshop for years, and a few weeks ago they finally agreed to let us in. After working out strict COVID protocols, we went to Massachusetts to see how they make robots do the unimaginable. From the outside, Boston Dynamics headquarters looks pretty normal. If Willy Wonka made robots, his workshop might look something like this. There are robots in corridors, offices and kennels.

Can China's new AI news anchors give Anderson Cooper a run for his money?

#artificialintelligence

China's state-owned Xinhua News Agency introduced so-called "composite anchors" on Wednesday, combining the images and voices of human anchors with artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The new AI anchors, launched by Xinhua and Beijing-based search engine operator Sogou during the World Internet Conference in Wuzhen, can deliver the news with "the same effect" as human anchors because the machine learning programme is able to synthesise realistic-looking speech, lip movements and facial expressions, according to a Xinhua news report on Wednesday. "AI anchors have officially become members of the Xinhua News Agency reporting team. They will work with other anchors to bring you authoritative, timely and accurate news information in both Chinese and English," Xinhua said. The AI anchors are now available throughout Xinhua's internet and mobile platforms such as its official Chinese and English apps, WeChat public account, and online TV webpage.
